How can educators appropriately provide support to this population? Based on research of the social, emotional, and academic needs of secondary immigrant students, this session will offer useful strategies and techniques for content-area and ESOL teachers of newcomer ELLs. Additionally, campus and district leaders will gain practical advice about a systemic approach to meeting the needs of the ever-increasing student population. This session will highlight several components relevant to newcomer instruction including: cultural proficiency, second language acquisition strategies, scheduling/credits, and effective content-area instruction. Registration is $169 for Carolina TESOL Members $179 for Non- Members Attendees will get: an exceptional day of training with Valentina Gonzalez a copy of the book Pathways to Greatness and lunch provided Valentina Gonzalez, who now works for Seidlitz Education, is from Katy, Texas where she delivers professional development as well as coaches teachers on sheltered instruction and ESL strategies. She served for many years as an ESL teacher and as a language arts teacher. Her experience as an immigrant and language learner fuels her passion for advocating for English learners and supporting teachers with the best research-based, teaching methods. Valentina earned a Master’s in Leadership and Administration form Lamar University and a Bachelor’s in Education from the University of Houston. She has had the opportunity to present in Texas and nationally.
